The good news: a silent disco fits into essentially any venue in Devon. There are no speakers to position, no PA rigging, no bass bins to shake the fixtures and fittings. But different venue types come with their own practical considerations — this is the tour.
Wedding barns & country estates
Devon has more brilliant barn venues per square mile than almost anywhere in the UK, and nearly all of them come with a noise limiter — a small red-light device that cuts power to any PA that exceeds a set decibel limit. Traditional DJs hate these; silent discos ignore them completely because there's no speaker output being measured.
Questions to ask a barn venue:
- Do you allow third-party entertainment? (Almost always yes.)
- Is there a 240V socket at the dancefloor end of the room?
- What time do guests need to leave the site? (Not the music curfew — the overall carriages time.)
- Can we access the room 60 minutes before the evening starts for setup?
Hotels
Silent disco works especially well in hotels because it stops the music travelling into other guests' rooms — the number-one complaint at hotel weddings. Some hotels are wary of silent disco simply because they haven't seen it before; a quick note that it's completely silent from the outside usually settles it.
Village halls & community centres
The classic Devon village hall — hard floor, echoey acoustics, thin walls. These venues are often the worst for traditional discos (booming bass, complaints from the cottages next door) and the best for silent discos. The neighbours literally hear nothing.
Village halls sometimes have very old wiring. Check the socket you plan to use isn't on a circuit shared with a kettle or a fridge — silent disco kit draws almost no power, but a tripped RCD ruins the evening either way.
Schools

Marquees
Marquees are essentially outdoor events with a roof. Everything from our outdoor guide applies. Key extra note: marquee flooring is usually raised timber, which transmits bass to neighbours in a surprising way with a traditional PA. Silent disco removes the problem entirely.
Gardens & outdoor spaces

Beaches & unusual venues
Beach silent discos are technically simple but need permission from the relevant authority (usually the district council or a private landowner). The kit runs from a small battery pack; keep sand out of the transmitter fan.

- Confirm they allow you to bring your own entertainment kit.
- Confirm access time — you want the kit set up 30–60 minutes before guests arrive.
- Confirm the venue's overall guests-off-site time (not the music curfew).
- Send the venue a one-line description: "It's a silent disco — no speakers, no external noise."
