Silent disco kit is reliable, but like any technology it can misbehave on the night. The good news is that most issues have simple fixes. This guide covers the problems we see most often and how to solve them quickly.
Headphone won't turn on
- Hold the power button for 2–3 seconds. A quick press may not be enough.
- Check that the headphone was charged. Place it on a charging station for 10 minutes and try again.
- Try a different headphone from the spares pile.
If multiple headphones won't turn on, the issue is likely the charging setup rather than the headphones themselves. Check the charging station is plugged in and switched on.
No sound in one or both ear cups
- Check the volume wheel is turned up.
- Make sure the headphone is on the correct channel — the LED colour should match the active transmitter.
- Try switching channels and back again.
- Wiggle the headphone band gently to check for a loose connection.
If the problem persists, swap the headphone for a spare and set the faulty one aside. Don't try to repair headphones during the event.
Keep a "faulty" box or labelled area for any headphones with issues. This stops them being handed back out by mistake and makes final checks easier.
One channel has no sound
This is almost always an audio cable or music source problem, not a headphone problem. Check in this order:
- Is the music source playing? Check the phone, laptop or tablet isn't paused or muted.
- Is the audio cable fully plugged in at both ends?
- Is the cable connected to the correct input on the transmitter?
- Try a different audio cable if you have a spare.
Static or intermittent sound
Static usually means range or interference. Try these fixes:
- Move closer to the transmitter. Walls, people and metal objects can reduce range.
- Make sure the transmitter isn't hidden behind a speaker, table or wall.
- Check for other wireless devices nearby that might cause interference.
- Replace the headphone battery if it's running low — weak batteries can cause audio dropouts.
Poor range or dropouts
Most silent disco transmitters cover a large hall or garden easily, but range drops when the signal has to pass through obstacles. For the best range:
- Place the transmitter high up and in the centre of the dancing area if possible.
- Avoid placing it on the floor or behind metal objects.
- For outdoor events, keep the transmitter under cover and away from rain.
- Don't stack spare headphones or metal equipment directly on or around the transmitter.
If you hire an on-site operator from No Noise, they handle all of this for you. For self-hire bookings, we provide a printed troubleshooting card and phone support during your event.
Headphones not charging
- Check the charging station is plugged in and the power light is on.
- Make sure the headphones are seated correctly in the charging slots.
- Look for a charging indicator light on the headphone itself.
- Try a different charging slot or power socket.
If a headphone won't hold charge at all, remove it from service and use a spare. We always recommend hiring 10% more headphones than you need so a few faults don't stop the party.
Music is too quiet or distorted
If the overall volume is low even with the headphone turned up, the input level from the music source may be too low. Turn up the volume on the phone, laptop or tablet feeding that channel. If the music sounds distorted, the input level is too high — turn it down slightly.
