How silent disco works for guests — a first-timer's guide

Quick answer

Guests put on wireless headphones, choose between three music channels with a small switch, and the headphones light up to show which channel they're on. They control their own volume, can take the headphones off to talk, and switch channels whenever they like.

If you've never been to a silent disco, the idea can seem odd. A room full of people dancing with headphones on? But the guest experience is surprisingly simple, social and fun — and it's the reason so many people become converts after their first go.

Arrival and pickup

When guests arrive at the silent disco area, they pick up a pair of wireless headphones from a designated table or from a member of staff. The headphones are fully charged, padded and adjustable. We show guests how to put them on and where the controls are.

Some hosts hand out a small card explaining the three channels and what music is on each. This is especially helpful at weddings and charity events where guests may be trying a silent disco for the first time.

The headphones

Our LED headphones are lightweight, comfortable for several hours and easy to use. Each pair has:

  • A power button to turn them on.
  • A channel switch to move between the three music channels.
  • A volume wheel so guests control how loud it is.
  • LED lights that glow red, blue or green to match the active channel.

The lights aren't just for show — they let everyone see which channel is winning the dancefloor. When a big song comes on one channel, you'll often see the whole room switch colour at once.

Top tip

If a guest can't hear anything, the most common cause is the volume being down or the headphone not being switched on. Check those two things first before assuming there's a technical problem.

Choosing a channel

Guests flick the channel switch until they find music they like. Most people try all three channels within the first few minutes, then settle on a favourite. When a song they don't like comes on, they simply switch — no awkward shuffle off the dancefloor.

This is the core of what makes silent disco social. Three groups of people can be dancing to completely different songs, but they're all in the same room, sharing the same energy. You'll see people pointing at each other's headphone colours and swapping channels to dance together.

Volume and comfort

Guests set their own volume. This is a huge advantage for mixed-age events — older guests can keep it comfortable, while younger guests can turn it up. If someone wants to talk, they slip the headphones off or down around their neck. The music only exists for the person wearing the headphones.

Good to know

Our headphones are volume-limited for kids' events, so even if a child turns the wheel all the way up, the level stays safe. For adult events, full volume range is available.

The social side

Silent discos create a unique social dynamic. Because the room isn't filled with speaker noise, people can chat without leaving the dancefloor. Friends can compare channels. Strangers bond over discovering they're on the same song. And the sight of a whole room silently singing along is genuinely funny.

For hosts, this means less pressure on a single playlist. Guests entertain themselves by exploring channels, competing for the biggest crowd, and switching sides mid-song.

What guests should bring

Almost nothing. Guests don't need their own headphones, apps or phones. We do recommend:

  • Comfortable shoes — it's still a dancefloor.
  • A hair tie if wearing elaborate hair, as headphone bands can disturb updos.
  • A sense of humour — silent discos are more fun when guests embrace the absurdity.

Returning headphones

At the end of the night, guests return their headphones to the collection point. We count them in, check for any issues, and pack them away. If you've hired an on-site operator, they handle this for you.
