Devon school prom students dancing at a silent disco

Event Story

School prom silent disco in Devon — event story

The short version

A Devon secondary school wanted a prom finale that felt special, worked within the venue's 11pm noise curfew, and suited a year group with mixed music tastes. We provided 100 headphones, three channels, atmospheric lighting and an on-site operator. 95% of the year group danced, the event ran past the original curfew, and the school rebooked for the following year.

The brief

The school's prom committee had a familiar problem. They had booked a beautiful venue in Devon for the leavers' prom, but the hire agreement included a strict noise curfew. A traditional DJ would have to finish early, and the committee wanted the night to end on a high. They also knew the year group had wildly different music tastes — chart, indie, throwbacks — and a single playlist would leave half the room bored.

They contacted No Noise looking for something that would feel modern, memorable and practical. We suggested a 100-headphone silent disco with three curated channels, party lighting and an on-site operator to manage the kit so teachers could focus on supervising the event.

The challenge

School proms come with constraints that don't apply to most parties:

  • The venue had an 11pm amplified music curfew.
  • Teachers needed to supervise without being drowned out by a PA.
  • The playlist had to be appropriate for a school environment across all three channels.
  • The committee had a fixed budget and couldn't risk technical problems on the night.

The solution

We delivered the full silent disco kit the day before the prom so the committee could see how it worked during setup. On the night, our operator arrived early, set up the transmitter and ran a quick soundcheck with the committee's playlist devices.

The three channels were:

  • Channel 1 — Current chart and clean party hits.
  • Channel 2 — 2010s throwbacks and singalongs.
  • Channel 3 — Indie, rock and alternative anthems.

We also provided four atmospheric party lighting units to turn the school hall into a proper prom venue. The operator stayed for four hours, handing out headphones, helping students switch channels and collecting kit at the end.

What made it work

The committee ran a short playlist survey two weeks before the prom. Students voted for their must-play songs, which we then distributed across the three channels. It meant almost everyone heard something they'd asked for on the night.

The result

The silent disco became the highlight of the night. Once the formal meal and awards finished, students moved into the hall and picked up headphones. Within ten minutes, the dancefloor was full. The LED headphones turned the room into a sea of red, blue and green lights as students switched between channels.

Because there was no amplified sound leaving the building, the venue agreed the event could run past the original 11pm curfew. The committee told us afterwards that 95% of the year group danced at some point — far higher than previous proms with a traditional DJ.

"The students are still talking about it. It was the first prom where everyone — not just the usual group — was on the dancefloor. The teachers loved that they could supervise without shouting over music."

What we learned

This event confirmed what we already suspected: silent discos are perfectly suited to school proms. The format solves the curfew problem, handles mixed music tastes, and gives teachers and organisers more control. The playlist survey was a simple addition that made a big difference, and we've since recommended it to other school clients.
