40th birthday silent disco in Devon — event story

The short version

A 40th birthday in a Mid-Devon village hall with a 10pm noise cutoff. We supplied 60 headphones and three channels — 80s pop, 90s/00s bangers and current chart — plus lighting and an on-site operator. Everyone from the birthday girl's mum to her teenage nephew danced.

The brief

Turning 40 in a Devon village hall is a classic Devon party. The birthday host wanted a night that felt properly celebratory, but she'd been to enough 40ths to know what usually goes wrong: half the guests sit down after the first hour because the playlist doesn't quite fit anyone.

She'd seen a silent disco at a friend's wedding earlier that year and asked if we could bring the same energy to a private hire hall on a Saturday night.

The challenge

  • The village hall had a 10pm music curfew because of nearby cottages.
  • Guest age range spanned 15 to 75 — three generations at least.
  • The birthday host wanted to keep costs sensible; a full band was out of scope.
  • She wanted to control the playlists herself rather than trust a stranger DJ with her favourite songs.

The solution

We delivered a 60-headphone package with lighting and one of our operators on-site for the evening. The birthday host built three playlists in Spotify ahead of the night — one per channel — and we plugged her phone straight into the transmitter on arrival.

The channels were:

  • Channel 1 (Red) — "The 80s": pop, disco and power ballads.
  • Channel 2 (Blue) — "The 90s Party": Britpop, dance anthems and RnB.
  • Channel 3 (Green) — "Right Now": current chart and party classics.

We set up in the corner of the hall so the dancefloor stayed clear, ran the lighting off the trestle tables at the sides, and briefed the birthday host on channel switching so she could take requests through the evening.

The result

The dancefloor was busy from the first song. Because guests could pick their own channel, older relatives happily stayed for hours on Channel 1 while cousins in their 20s bounced between Channels 2 and 3. Because there was no amplified sound leaving the building, the hall committee had no complaints — the party ran to the 10pm curfew and then transitioned into a quieter chat-and-cake wind-down without the awkward "music off" moment.

What we learned

Milestone birthdays (30s, 40s, 50s, 60s) all share the same problem: the guest list is wider than a single DJ playlist can serve. Splitting music by decade rather than trying to blend it is almost always the right call — and letting the birthday host name the channels themselves makes the whole thing feel personal rather than generic.

What made it work

Naming the channels ("The 80s", "The 90s Party", "Right Now") on a chalkboard beside the headphones table instantly got guests talking about which channel they were on — a great icebreaker.

"My mum was on the floor. My teenage nephew was on the floor. My friend who never dances was on the floor. I've never had that at a party before."
